Esterbauer, Reinhold (ed.): Das Unfassbare vor Augen. Neue phänomenologische Annäherungen an Religion. Für Günther Pöltner zum 80. Geburtstag, Freiburg/Br.: Alber, 2023.
Despite the crisis of institutionalized religion, religious questions occupy philosophical reflection more than ever. The volume bundles different approaches to the philosophy of religion, which at the same time deal with current topics in an exemplary manner. Important approaches from the history of philosophy are reflected as well as political or art-theoretical implications. Thus, an overview of current debates is offered, which include not only Christian denominations, but also other religions. Last but not least, problems of possible new approaches to phenomenologically determined philosophy of religion as well as their conditions in late modernity are addressed. With contributions by StefanBeig, Michael Blamauer, Hans Brandl, Reinhold Esterbauer, Wolfgang Fasching, Matthias Flatscher, Peter Gaitsch, Thomas Sören Hoffmann, Waldemar Jakimiuk, Branko Klun, Susanne Kummer, Sophie Loidolt, Gerhard Luf, Daniel Popelka, Markus Riedenauer, Martin Ross, Philipp Schmidt, Walter Schweidler, Günter Virt and Martin Weiß.

How can the religious be thought honestly today? What is the relationship between philosophy and religion or theology? Is a religious faith only one option among others or rather a deep dimension of human existence, also in a pluralistic culture? To what extent are religious and liberal values compatible? Two opposing diagnoses hold these questions in tension: on the one hand, the claim that we live in a secular or post-religious age, and on the other hand, the assumption of a "return of the religious" in a post-secular era. The difference between secular and religious pervades all debates in cultural studies and equally touches on questions about the role of ethics, a solidary way of life, and feminist theorizing in our late modern societies. In three perspectives, this volume captures the dialectic of religion and reason: The analysis in terms of philosophy of religion brings to light fundamental convergences and differences. The view of the factual parallelism of secular and religious practices under the common umbrella of a social identity thematizes the stability of plural life worlds. Finally, the horizon of a global ethos proves to be the touchstone against which profane and religious value concepts must assert themselves. The discourses addressed correspond to the central research questions in the work of the phenomenologist and philosopher of religion Yvanka B. Raynova, full professor of contemporary philosophy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The present volume is considered a Festschrift in her honor on the occasion of her 60th birthday.
